Clean living does not have to mean a spotless home or a cupboard full of products. A few routines that fit your household can make rooms easier to use and easier to maintain. Start with the places you touch and walk through most, then build a schedule you can actually keep.
Start at the entrance
A mat, a place for shoes and a quick sweep can help keep outdoor dirt from travelling through the house. Keep the entry clear enough to move comfortably. In a rental or shared building, agree who looks after the entrance and how often it needs attention.
Give busy rooms a short daily reset
Clear kitchen work surfaces before wiping them. Put away items that make cleaning awkward, deal with spills promptly and let damp cloths dry between uses. A short reset is easier to repeat than waiting until a room needs a major clean. Add bathroom surfaces and frequently used handles to your regular checklist.
Think about the air as well as the surfaces
Health Canada recommends damp cleaning for floors, regular vacuuming with suitable filtration and reducing pollutants at their source. Ventilate when outdoor conditions permit; an open window is not always helpful during poor outdoor air quality. Consider low-emission cleaning products and follow their directions rather than using more than you need.
Make room for occasional deeper work
Set aside time for tasks that are easy to overlook: baseboards, accessible areas under furniture and windows. Tell your cleaner about delicate surfaces, children, animals and product preferences before the visit. The right routine depends on your space and how it is used.
